Navajo Nation  Foster Grandparent Program helps Navajo elders to keep active through community service by caring for or tutoring and mentoring Navajo children who are academically lagging behind.

More than 200 Navajo elders serve at the 68 Navajo Head Start Centers,  30 public, community and boarding schools and 12 day care centers on the Navajo Nation and towns bordering the Navajo reservation each year.

Elders tutor/mentor with reading, writing and language arts or assist with basic care for infant and pre-school kids.  Elders also help with preserving the Navajo language, heritage and culture by serving youth in the local school immersion programs.
