Mission:
The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) offers seniors the opportunity to serve as
mentors, tutors, and caregivers to children and youth with exceptional needs.
Foster Grandparents may serve institutions such as schools, hospitals, drug
treatment facilities, shelters, Head Start programs and day care centers.
Goal:
The Foster
Grandparent Program of Southwestern Pennsylvania will strive to recruit and
train limited-income seniors, ages 60 or older, to provide twenty hours per week
of one-on-one attention including socialization and supportive care to special
needs children.
Today: Our
program is continually increasing. The Southwestern Chapter now has 234 Foster
Grandparents volunteering in 154 Sites in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler,
Fayette, Greene and Washington Counties.
Volunteers:
Foster Grandparents serve at least 20 hours each week. They receive a tax-free
stipend to help defray the cost of serving. In addition, Foster Grandparents
receive travel reimbursement, and supplemental insurance while volunteering.
Grandparents are recognized throughout the year and are invited to attend an
annual Recognition Luncheon for their service to the community.
Volunteer
Sites: In 2006-2007, 218 Foster Grandparents volunteered
with special needs children at 154 sites in 6 counties in Southwestern
Pennsylvania:
Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, and Washington.
Sponsor: The
Foster Grandparent Program of Southwestern Pennsylvania is sponsored locally by
the
American Red Cross Southwestern
Pennsylvania Chapter
and is funded by the
Corporation for National and
Community Service.
