Colfax County, New Mexico

We are located in rural Northeastern New Mexico about 225 miles from Amarillo, Texas; Denver, Colorado and Albuquerque, New Mexico.  We serve all of Colfax County and are expanding into adjoining Union County.  We currently have 40 volunteers located in the villages of Maxwell, Cimarron, Springer, Raton and Eagle Nest.

Foster Grandparents work in a school under the supervision of a teacher, helping children with special needs.  They help with reading, math and other subjects and skills.

Senior Companions visit shut-in adult clients, most of whom are elderly.  They help the clients with simple daily chores, take them shopping or to doctors, provide respite care for the caregiver and in general become their friendly companion.

Volunteers in both programs work in the area where they live.  If the volunteers qualify, income wise, they will be paid a stipend as reimbursement for their time which can amount to as much as $400 a month.  This income is not reportable income for the IRS, Low Income Housing, SSI or any other benefit program the volunteer may be eligible for.

Senior Corps taps the skills, talents, and experience of more than half a million older Americans to meet community needs in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security, and other areas. Senior Corps is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, which also oversees AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America.
